Hej friends,
Ive just woken up with a cruel hangover and am typing this in the lobby of the Scandic Hotel in Herning...
Last night Europe conquered "Haze Over Haarum" in Harboøre - the headliners billed to close the 3-day festival.
The town itself is (almost) as remote as you can imagine for Denmark... flat green fields and grazing cows, but for just under 2 hours the sky above Haze was aflame with light and sound that could impress even the most jaded of punters!
For 30 minutes prior to their appearance on stage, the intoxicated Danish crowds could be heard chanting "Do do dooo dooooo" (countdown-style) over their full plastic cups of Tuborg from every corner of the green and every beer-shed on the lawn. It was clear they had pigeonholed EUROPE for being responsible for only producing "that" hit again...
But then, Europe took to the stage just after 11pm to a thunderous opening of "Love Is Not the Enemy"... the drunked Danish crowd paled with surprise when hit with this mighty wall of sound! By the second or third song, the punters abandoned their drinking posts to saunter to the edge of the stage and punch the air with an (inebriated) gusto that only the Danes know how.
The band launched attack after attack, Joey "twisting it" to keep the revellers guessing... I was happy to hear the brief return again of Marley's "No Woman No Cry" to the "Superstitious" set.
At the halfway point to the show, the crowd were won over... the thunderous guitar and gravelly bass coerced them to jump like crazy. The hundreds of teens in the audience turned to those "veterans" amongst us and commented that "these guys really f**kin' rock!". Crowd-surfers floated past above our heads and it was only when when "Carrie" began that the youngsters stared at one another blankly as many hadnt been born when the famous refrain was written that Joey invited the crowd to sing back to him.
As the evening drew to a close, the punters were warm (well, as warm as a Dane can muster) and appreciative of the great show that lay behind them. It was when the opening low rumble of "Countdown" coarsed out into the night that pandemonium struck... the audience swelled 3 times in size and the Danes leapt in undulating waves.
Once again the band emerged victorious, and the punters staggered back to their tents and vehicles for the long trip home.
All in all, a great show that many feel reached a wider demographic. It wouldnt surprise me if several hundred new teens hunted through the CD stores in Harboøre today for their own piece of Europe gold.
Anyone in doubt of attending any of the shows this summer will not be disappointed!

Hm, I was at center stage perhaps 4 or 5 meters from the front and there didnt seem to be too much problem with the vocal sound from where we stood.
